Evdakia, 63, is a freelance cow breeder in Oymyakonsky district from Yakutia, situated in Oriental Siberia, recognized as the coldest permanently inhabited settlement on Earth by winter average temperatures, and known as the Pole of Cold. Despite a rather stable average annual temperature, the region is now experiencing thermal anomalies, heavy snowfall and forest fires. Summer heat, more and more strong, dries out the vegetation necessary for livestock breeding, endangering traditional activities. At her farm, Evdakia raises 47 cows, among which she try to restore the Yakut breed that was replaced at Soviet time by Simmentals. The milk of the Yakut cow is distinguished by a higher percentage of fat content, useful properties and acids and "marble tenderness" meat, very beneficial to health. From her activity of producing milk products and selling meat she earns nearly 150 euros par month. Oymyakonsky district, not having a specific geoclimatic status despite its harsh climate conditions, does not benefit from financial aid for the construction of the infrastructures necessary for daily life and livestock farming. Without running water and central heating, Evdakia braves winter temperatures of around -45°C outside and -15°C in her stable for cows to prepare hay, water and clean the space. Her brother, Ilya, helps her on a daily basis to support her in its passion.
